SkyLedger is a digital aircraft spotting logbook application and associated online service operated by Timothy Redman, a sole trader trading as SkyLedger (“SkyLedger”, “we”, “us” or “our”).

This Privacy Policy applies to the SkyLedger mobile applications for iOS and Android, the SkyLedger website at SkyLedgerApp.com, and associated SkyLedger services.

We take the privacy and security of our users seriously. This Privacy Policy explains:

when service providers may process it on our behalf;
how we use location information;

SkyLedger is designed to allow you to build and maintain an aircraft spotting logbook.

Information entered or generated as part of your logbook may include:

aircraft registrations;
aircraft manufacturers;
aircraft types;
aircraft models and variants;
airlines;
aircraft operators;
flight numbers;
airports;
spotting locations;
latitude and longitude;
sighting dates;
sighting times;
photographs;
notes;
information obtained from aviation-data services;
and other information you choose to associate with a sighting.

Individual aircraft information is generally not personal information about you.

However, when aircraft sightings are associated with your SkyLedger account, they may reveal information about your activities.

For example, your spotting history may indicate where you were on a particular date.

We therefore treat account-associated logbook information appropriately as user data and, where it identifies or relates to you, as personal information.

7. Photographs and Images

SkyLedger may allow you to:

take photographs using your device camera;
select existing photographs from your device;
associate photographs with aircraft sightings;
store photographs locally;
and synchronise photographs with SkyLedger’s cloud services.

Where photographs are uploaded to SkyLedger’s cloud infrastructure, they may be stored using Firebase Cloud Storage or related infrastructure.

Photographs can contain information other than the aircraft you intended to photograph.

For example, an image could contain:

identifiable people;
vehicle registration plates;
buildings;
location information;
metadata;
or other potentially identifying information.

You are responsible for ensuring that photographs you upload to SkyLedger are lawful and appropriate.

We do not sell photographs stored in your SkyLedger account.

We do not provide your photographs to advertisers or data brokers.

We do not use your photographs for unrelated advertising purposes.

8. How We Use Your Location

Location is an important part of aircraft spotting.

SkyLedger can use your device’s location to make recording aircraft sightings quicker and more useful.

If you give SkyLedger permission to access your location, the application may automatically determine your location when you use location-dependent features.

Depending upon your device, permissions and the functionality being used, this may include precise geographical location, including GPS-derived latitude and longitude.

8.1 What We Use Your Location For

SkyLedger may use location information to:

identify airports near your current location;
suggest the airport or location where you are spotting;
automatically determine where an aircraft sighting is being recorded;
associate a sighting with an airport;
associate a sighting with a spotting location;
reduce the information you need to enter manually;
organise your sightings by location;
allow you to search or review sightings by location;
generate statistics about airports and locations you have visited;
and provide other location-based aircraft spotting functionality.

For example, if you are spotting at an airport and create a new aircraft sighting, SkyLedger may use your current location to suggest the relevant airport rather than requiring you to find it manually.

8.2 Location Stored With Your Sightings

Where location information is recorded as part of a sighting, it becomes part of your SkyLedger logbook.

This may include:

airport;
named spotting location;
latitude and longitude;
date and time;
or other relevant geographical information.

Depending upon the features you use, this information may be stored locally on your device and synchronised with SkyLedger’s Firebase cloud infrastructure.

A collection of historical location records can reveal significant information about an individual’s movements and activities.

For this reason, we treat account-associated location history as personal information.

8.3 Location Permissions

SkyLedger will request permission before accessing device location where required by your operating system.

Depending upon your device, you may have options including:

precise location;
approximate location;
location while using the application;
one-off location access;
or no location access.

You remain in control of these permissions.

You can change or withdraw SkyLedger’s location permission through the privacy or location settings provided by iOS or Android.

8.4 If You Disable Location

Automatic location access is not required simply to maintain a SkyLedger aircraft logbook.

If you deny or withdraw location permission, functionality that does not require automatic location detection can continue to operate.

Where supported, you can enter an airport or spotting location manually.

Features such as automatic identification of nearby airports may not operate correctly without location permission.

8.5 Background Location

Unless SkyLedger introduces and clearly identifies functionality requiring background location in the future, SkyLedger does not use your device to continuously track your movements in the background.

Location access is intended to support aircraft spotting functionality when location information is required.

If this changes materially in the future, we will update this Privacy Policy and obtain any permissions or consent required.

8.6 Existing Location History

Turning off location permission prevents future location access through that permission. It does not automatically remove location information already stored in existing sightings.

You may edit or delete relevant sightings using functionality available within SkyLedger.

You may also request deletion of your account and associated cloud-stored information.

8.7 What We Do Not Do With Your Location

SkyLedger uses your location to provide aircraft spotting functionality.

We do not sell your location information.

We do not sell your location history.

We do not provide your spotting locations to data brokers.

We do not provide your location history to third parties for their own independent advertising or marketing purposes.

We do not use your spotting locations to create advertising profiles for sale to third parties.

Where a service provider such as Google Firebase processes stored location information, it does so as part of providing infrastructure or services used to operate SkyLedger.

Our principle is simple:

Where you spotted an aircraft is useful information for your logbook. It isn’t a product for us to sell.

When you use SkyLedger, technical information may be collected or generated automatically.

This may include:

device model;
operating system;

Firebase Authentication may be used to create, authenticate and manage SkyLedger user accounts.

Firebase database services may be used to store and synchronise information associated with SkyLedger accounts.

and other information necessary to provide SkyLedger.

12.3 Firebase Cloud Storage

Firebase Cloud Storage may be used to store files associated with SkyLedger accounts, including photographs and other supported user-generated content.

12.4 Firebase Analytics

SkyLedger may use Firebase Analytics to understand how the application is used.

Information processed may include:

application events;
screens viewed;
feature interactions;
application version;
device characteristics;

technical identifiers;

This information helps us understand which SkyLedger features are useful and how the application can be improved.

12.5 Firebase Crashlytics

processing subscriptions;

12.8 Firebase Cloud Messaging

Firebase Cloud Messaging may be used to deliver notifications to your device.

Technical information such as notification tokens may be processed to deliver notifications.

You can control SkyLedger notifications through your device settings.

12.9 Other Firebase Services

SkyLedger may use additional Firebase services where necessary to operate, secure, monitor or improve the application.

Where introducing a service materially changes how personal information is processed, this Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly.

12.10 Google’s Role

Google may process information on behalf of SkyLedger when providing Firebase and associated cloud infrastructure.

Google operates internationally and information may therefore be processed outside the United Kingdom.

Where required by applicable data-protection law, appropriate safeguards will be used for international transfers.

The use of Firebase does not mean that SkyLedger sells your personal information to Google.

SkyLedger does not necessarily receive or store your complete debit or credit card details when payment is processed by an app store or external payment provider.

We may receive information concerning a purchase, including:

renewal status;
expiry date;

and whether an entitlement is active.

Payment and app-store providers process information in accordance with their own privacy policies.

Third-party providers may also receive standard technical information associated with requests made to their services.

Where a provider processes personal information on our behalf, appropriate data-protection arrangements will be used where required.

Certain information may need to be retained for longer where required by law or reasonably necessary to:

resolve disputes;

23. Backups

SkyLedger may maintain backups as part of normal service operation, security and disaster recovery.

When information is deleted from active systems, copies may remain temporarily in backups until those backups are overwritten or expire according to their normal lifecycle.

Deleted information retained solely within a backup will not normally be restored to active systems except where necessary for legitimate disaster-recovery purposes.

24. Deleting Your SkyLedger Account and Personal Data

You can request deletion of your SkyLedger account and associated personal information.

Where possible, please contact us from the email address associated with your SkyLedger account.

We may need to verify your identity before deleting information. This is intended to protect users against fraudulent or unauthorised deletion requests.

Following successful verification, we will delete or anonymise personal information that we are not legally required or otherwise lawfully permitted to retain.

Depending upon the information associated with your account, deletion may include:

cloud-stored aircraft sightings;
spotting locations;
historical location information;
user-created notes;
photographs stored within SkyLedger’s cloud services;

Account deletion may be irreversible.

Where SkyLedger provides an export function, you should export any information you wish to retain before deleting your account.

Deleting the SkyLedger application from your device does not automatically delete your SkyLedger account or information stored in the cloud.

You must use any account-deletion functionality provided by SkyLedger or contact support@skyledgerapp.com if you want your account and associated cloud data deleted.
